The “Green Card ” is a card that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS ) issues to lawful permanent residents of the United States, and acts as proof that such person has permission to live and work in our country. If you are a lawful permanent resident 18 years of age or older, you have a legal obligation to carry a current and valid residence at all times.
You must request a replacement green card if the card is about to expire, has expired, you have lost it, or if it has been mutilated or destroyed. You should also request a replacement if the information on your card is wrong, if your personal information has changed (such as your name), among others.
However, if you are a conditional permanent resident , you should not apply for a replacement green card to remove the conditions from your residence. A conditional permanent resident must apply for a replacement only if he never received his green card, if it got lost , stolen, destroyed, or mutilated. Other instances where you must obtain a replacement as a conditional resident is when the information on the card is incorrect, or if your personal information has changed.
